Songs and Poems is a composition by American composer Philip Glass. The work is written for solo cello and specifically for cellist Wendy Sutter. The composition is atypical for Glass. Now there are no loopholes and chords from his famous minimal music repertoire, but moody songs, too, without singing, for the cello. The cello is seen by him as the instrument that has the most of the human voice. Originally composed of 6 songs, Glass later added part V; It turned out to be / be the emotional heart of the composition. It is a chaconne, of which Sutter after the premiere in New York City said that "it was difficult to move on after such an emotional piece of music". The composition is in the distance related to the movie music for Chaotic Harmony, but that source is barely recognizable. The parts are numbered: Song I - Song VII. Source and discography
