The three Welsh novels (Y Tair Rhamant in Welsh) are three stories associated with Mabinogion. They are versions of Arthurian legends found in Chrétien de Troyes. The scholars have discussed whether novels are derived from Chrétien's poems, or vice versa, or whether all of these have a common source. It is possible that the novels derive, directly or indirectly, from Chrétien, which probably came back to ancient Celtic sources. The novels survive in the Rhydderch White Paper and Hergest's Red Book, which can be dated back to the 14th century.
