Wenzeslaus Wieden

Wenzeslaus Wieden (Langenau, 1769 - Ostend, 1814) was a Bohemian-Belgian painter. He was married to Josephine-Thérèse Vermeire. "The port of Ostend, 1814". A French corvette approaches the port of Oostende while other ships firing the market. The old lighthouse and the semaphore are clearly visible.

Wieden was specialized in painting portraits in backgliding technology (so-called églomisé). Wieden was employed in Ostend, certainly from 1802. He is the oldest known artist in Belgium who practiced this genre and this technique. This precursor was a high-ranking dilettant who painted his ships in an excellent way. His paintings did not constitute mass production. Only six works of his own known.

Navolgers in Ostend were: François-Laurent Meseure, Peter Nefors, E. Devriese and the Weyts family. The Frenchman Lamartinière would have been his pupil.

He signed his works with W.W. or W. Wieden. Collections Literature
