The Berkenhorst (holiday park)

The main building of De Berkenhorst Swimming pool

The Berkenhorst is a holiday park on the Kootwijkerzand, the largest sand spray in Western Europe. The park has several facilities, such as a restaurant, several sports facilities and a subtropical swimming garden. The park is rented by Hogenboom Vakantieparken. The Berkenhorst has 121 bungalows.

The park opened in 1975 as the fifth park of Sport Center, nowadays Center Parcs. With 7.5 hectares and about 100 bungalows, this was the smallest park of Sporthuis Centrum, aimed at rest seekers and nature lovers. When the chain introduced in the 80's subtropical swimming paradises at all parks, De Berkenhorst proved to be too small. Therefore, a smaller variant, the subtropical swimming garden, was chosen. The pool did not have a wave pool, but it has a rapids, an outdoor pool, a slide, a hot tub, a children's pool and a sauna.

Due to a lack of expansion opportunities, the park was sold to Creative Holiday Parks in 1997 in Gran Dorado. In 2002, De Berkenhorst was sold to Landal Greenparks at the merger of Gran Dorado and Center Parcs. In addition to the original "Sport Center" bungalows of architect Jaap Bakema, new holiday homes have been built with more floor space.

Since January 2011, this park is under Hogenboom Vakantieparken, part of Roompot Vacations. 52° 11′ 21″ NB, 5° 47′ 41″ OL
