The novel tells the story of an Australian man, Fred Scully, and his six-year-old Billie daughter. Scully and his wife Jennifer planned to move from Australia to a cottage they bought in Ireland. Wife and daughter are waiting at the airport in Ireland, but only Billie arrives, traumatized and unable to explain to her father what has happened or because her mother embarked on the plane alone.
