Volksverhaal La Lutine

There is a folk story about the 18th century frigate La Lutine.

In a bank house in London comes a blurred form, it is not a good gentleman. The man is wearing a quirky jacket and just because the banker wants to build a clientele, he asks what he can serve the visitor. Mr. wants to speak to the director himself and goes to a small office. The banker must keep a letter and get a gold piece for this service. The man does not want to tell his name and does not say how long he wants to keep the letter in the bank. If the man never returns, the letter may not be opened. If the banker will read him, accident will strike, he still warns. The banker sees how the man disappears, a gray mist lizard remains behind. The banker stores the envelope and in the next month he gets a lot of customers. It seems as if the money rolls into its office and soon the small business grows into a treacherous banker's house. One day the banker's sons are successful and he finds the old letter in his closet. He thinks back in the years that he was still a youngster and he smiles when he breaks the seals. However, he can not read the signs and a cheek crawls through his body to his heart.

The sons find their father with his face on the letter. They do not worry about the unreadable old letter and they keep everything from the old one. The French Revolution, however, puts Europe on its head and England and France are in war. The Low Countries are occupied by the French and in 1799 the English want to liberate North Holland. A lot of money is needed and gold is shipped to Hamburg in a ship conquered in French on 1793. The sailors look forward to swords on the Reeperbahn, and no one thinks that lutin is an evil spirit. La Lutine is a female, so one hundred times worse than a lutin. Seaman superstition implies that the name of a ship can never be changed, this would cause an accident.

In October, crew in the madness gets the North Sea, but is being attacked by a storm of Terschelling. On the Westerlands, the frigate has perished with man and mouse. The raid in Noord-Holland was a defeat and the bank went bankrupt. La Lutine with her gold remains in the minds of people who want to get rich soon. The Karimata had an official dredging party and wanted to end the talks about an immeasurable gold treasure. Only one gold bar came up. It is said that around 1.2 million guilders have been saved and about 9 million clandestine have disappeared. You can sometimes hear a French giggle over the Western lands, the evil spirit is waiting for the gold. Sources
