Big Pole

The Great Pole

The Great Paal is a border pole, located in 1773 to indicate the border between the villages of Rijmenam and Keerbergen.

This pole was then established at the expense of the municipality of Rijmenam in order to put an end to the border disputes. On the open paved plain (later covered with pine forests), which then formed the border area of both villages, the border was not always clear. In order to prevent border incidents during wood sprouting, it was decided to set boundaries: two small and one large. The great one can be found at the intersection of the Grote Paallaan and Oude Keerbergsebaan. On the municipal table of Keerbergen there, a sandstone pole was placed in the 1950s, which serves as a focal point for the real Great Paal, which is about 10 meters from the road at the end of a sandy road between two gardens .

The pole is 1.50 meters high and contains the old weapon of Mr. van Rijmenam, including the Latin text Pagus de Rymenam finibus suis regundis e contractu poso anno MDCCLXXIII (= The municipality of Rijmenam has established this pole because its borders to be drawn up by agreement, year 1773).

The smaller posts can be found in the Brughoevestraat (an oblique arduin of about 40 centimeters high next to the municipal table) and on the corner of the Grote Paallaan with the Rijmenamseweg (a low beam-shaped arduin column next to the traffic sign). Frontiers like these are quite unique in Belgium. Therefore, the pole was also recognized as a monument. Apart from these, only the Borne de Ways are known between Baisy and Sart-Ladies-Avelines (Walloon Brabant) and the Borne d'Ensival between Ensival and Theux (Liège). Sage

The corner of Rijmenam where the pole stands is very rich in matters. The Great Pole also had its own saga. As no Rijmenamian citizen knew Latin, nobody knew what the text meant on the pole. According to the saga, an old, odd woman claimed that she only knew what the text wanted to say: nothing less than a pious treasure beneath the pole. Two brothers would ever dig, after hours, have dumped the treasure on which they began to cheer euphoria. After that, the treasure would suddenly be lost once again in the ground.
