In the Theravada there is a celebration of the Buddhist New Year. In countries where Theravada is used as Buddhism, such as Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Laos, this is a highlight and the most important celebration in Buddhism. This day is called Vesak (Wesak) or Visakha. In Myanmar this holiday is called Kason. (In addition to this most important Buddhist holiday, the Asian New Year celebrates in these countries and the sub-continent on April's full moon day). Data
The celebration dates are not fixed. In the above countries, it is celebrated during the three days on the first day of the full moon in May. In countries that follow Mahayana Buddhism, the Buddhist New Year begins on the first day of the full moon in January. However, cultural and ethnic backgrounds determine which day the new year is celebrated. In China, Korea and Vietnam, New Year is celebrated at the end of January or early February (according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar), while Tibetans celebrate the New Year only a month later. In other countries, the celebration begins on the last day (the full moon) of the Hindu month Chaitra. This is usually the first full moon in April. In 2016, the theravada new year will be celebrated on Friday, April 22.
