Altay (tank)

The Altay is an advanced third generation combat tank designed and developed by Otokar in cooperation with ASELSAN and Roketsan for the Turkish Army and Export Market. The Altay is the first tank developed by Turkey and is part of the MİTÜP project (Milli Tank Üretimi Projesi), ie: National Tank Production Project. The tank is named after General Fahrettin Altay (1880-1974), a Turkish General who fought in the Turkish Independence War. History

The MİTÜP project is an initiative that was developed in mid 1990 to provide the independent and robust infrastructure for the production, development and maintenance of major tanks used by Turkish armed forces. The project has begun with an agreement between Otokar and the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Turkey on March 30, 2007, when the Defense Industries Executive Committee awarded a contract worth about $ 500,000,000 to Otokar for design, development and production of 4 prototypes for a national combat tank. This is Turkey's first MBT development program since 1943, when prototypes were produced from a Turkish national tank but never reached full-scale mass production.
