Batista Tagme In The Waie

Batista Tagme Na Waie, also transliterated as Batista Tagme Na Wai or Tagmé Na Waié (Catió, 1949 - Bissau, March 1, 2009), was a guinean politician and military in charge as head of the armed forces at the time of his assassination.

Na Wai, a Balance Ethnic, was a member of the military junta who overthrew João Bernardo Vieira's government in the nineties, and a veteran of the Guinea-Bissau War of Independence. He became chief of the armed forces in October 2004 after the assassination of his predecessor Veríssimo Correia Seabra. He had been a rival to Vieira since the 1980s, when Vieira had tried to eliminate the country's most influential military. In January 2009 he claimed to have been the victim of an attempted murder.

His assassination took place on March 1, 2009, following a bomb attack in the Guinea-Bissau army general quarters. The day after the death of Na Waie, President Vieira was assassinated.
