From there they explored the north shore of the Tanganyica canoes in search of the Nile springs and spent two nights there, from 25 to 27 November 1871. Livingstone and Stanley were the first Europeans to go to Burundi, apart from the ephemeral appearance of Richard Francis Burton and John Hanning Speke in 1858 who watched the country alone by the lake without going down to shore. The meeting with the "whites" aroused wonders and had a remarkable local resonance: in their honor the people dedicated this monument.
