Via Panatenaica

Via Panatenaica

Panatenaica Street was a street in Athens, where processions were held at the Panatenee festivals, commemorating the foundation of the city by Teseo through the sinecism of several villages. Up to the Ippocleide crag (566-565 BC) the Panatenee were annual festivals that were celebrated from 24 to 28 of the month of Ecatombeone (8-12 August); After that date, other festivals called the Great Panatenee (to distinguish them from the precedents that took the name of Little Panatenee) were established, which took place every four years from 21 to 29 of the month of Ecatombeone (5-13 August). The main rite of both festivals was the processions that, going along the Panatenaica Street, left Ceramico, then stopped at all the most important sacred places in the city and finally climbed up to the Acropolis of Athens.
