Bararium

A bararium is a non-smoking area behind the bar of a cafe. This room, where the bar staff is, is largely separated from the rest of the cafe by means of a glass plate hanging vertically above the bar. The bar staff can shave under the glass, and checkout is no problem in this way.

Bararium is a contraction of the words bar and aquarium. The bararium works according to the principle of overpressure. Two lattices behind the bar leave fresh air, resulting in excessive pressure behind the glass plate. Thus, between the tooth and the glass plate, there is an 'air curtain' that does not allow smoke or odor, so the bar staff does not work in the smoke.

The principle was established in 2008. With effect from 1 July of that year smoking in the Dutch catering industry is forbidden to protect the catering staff from smoking. The bararium was developed by the company Jakon Air, in conjunction with the café-restaurant "Frans op den Bult" in the Twentse Deurningen, halfway between Hengelo and Oldenzaal. This restaurant, operated by Irma Hellegers, is mainly visited by truck drivers, which are often heavy smokers. Here the bararium was first taken into use.

Minister Ab Klink of Public Health has announced that the barrier does not comply with the law.
