Council


Concilium is an international theological magazine. It was founded in 1965 by businessman Antoine van den Boogaard and publisher Paul Brand Jr. under the guidance of the theologians Yves Congar OP, Hans Küng, Johann Baptist Metz OP, Karl Rahner SJ and Edward Schillebeeckx OP. Concilium is ecumenical, and the message about theology, but also about related areas (eg human sciences). Concilium is known as neo-modernist by conservatives.

The magazine was established to continue the theological discussion "in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council." Among the authors are big names (so were in the early years Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI, and Hans Urs von Balthasar author). Due to the fact that the magazine was already running quite freely, the Communio magazine was founded in 1972 as a less radical alternative.

Concilium is propelled by Nouvelle Théologie. Over time, more and more space for liberation theology and feminist theology became available. Important representatives of these trends, such as Gustavo Gutiérrez and Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, took part in the editorships of Concilium.

Concilium appears five times a year. The magazine's international secretariat is located in Nijmegen. It is published in various editions in German, English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. From 1976 to 2002 there was also a Dutch edition of.
