Hans Leonhard Schäufelein

Hans Leonhard Schäufelein (Nuremberg ?, approx. 1480 - Nördlingen, about 1538-1540) was a German painter, carpenter and bookshelter. He produced portraits and historical and religious scenes, and was also active as a glass painter.

In his early work, Schäufelein was a follower of Albrecht Dürer. In 1505, he completed his passion altar for keynote Frederik III of Saxony. In the years 1507 - 1508 he worked in Augsburg for Hans Holbein de Oude.

From 1510 until about 1515 he made woodcuts for Emperor Maximilian I.

His later work includes the Christ-Gartner altar (Alte Pinakothek, Munich) and the Ziegler altar (Nördlingen).
