Myceens Schachtgraf
The term schachtgraf refers to two types of graves.
In ancient times, it is the most artificial rock-laid shaft, as used by several early cultures. These shaft graves were mostly constructed as caves and sealed with stones or otherwise inaccessible. Especially the Mycenaean civilization is known for its shaft graves, often provided with a dromos.
The term is also used for a rectangular grave buried in the ground that can be reused. Soils and walls are often clad with stone. The grave is deeper than a coffin and is used mostly for multiple funerals. From the Middle Ages, this kind of shaft grave is the most common. Such graves are usually rented or hired for several years. Upon completion of the contract, it will be cleared and re-rented or leased.
