Tandriemaandrijving

A gear drive is a drive system that is used both in a motor and in the final drive. It is a special version of the belt drive.

The system consists of two pulleys with an outer envelope, with a toothed belt with inner lining. The toothing prevents slippage of the belt. Distribution

In a motor a toothed belt is used for a "synchronous" drive, that is, a drive with a fixed ratio, which under no circumstances may change. The camshaft drive is an example of that. Should the cam drive drive belt slip, the valves would not open and close at the right time, and in many cases would also change the ignition time. Toothed belts replace the gear drive and chain drive here. Both of these systems require a lubrication system, so they must also be in a specially closed part of the engine (distribution). For camshaft drive with large forces released, such as trucks, gears are still used.

Distribution strains must be replaced in good time. Breakage of a belt causes the inlet and outlet valves to remain stationary while the crankshaft still rotates. The up and down pistons can hit the valves causing large engine damage. Drive belt Tandriemaandrijving (BMW F 650 SC) Toothed belt in a Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod

In the end drive (from gearbox to rear wheel) of motorcycles, a toothed belt is sometimes used.

Although the use of a metal chain or card drive is still more common, the belt slowly wins popularity as it is much more maintenance-friendly than a metal chain and gears.

This type of drive is used on some types of brands BMW, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Harley-Davidson.

Some motorcycle brands, including Ducati and Rotax, use a toothed belt for the camshaft drive. In cars, the use of toothed belts for this application is quite common. The German brand Glas first fitted the toothed belt, but customers did not trust this belt drive at the moment.

The belt is also called a child's tie.

Tandem gear drives are increasingly used by bicycle manufacturers for bicycles with a gear hub. US supplier Gates launches belt drives for bicycles on the market for, inter alia, the Dutch brands Koga and Santos. Also see
