The Chaplin Band was a Dutch soul band from Maastricht, which lasted from 1976 to 1992.
The band was founded by John and Jo Bartels, brothers in order to catch up with the upcoming discorage. The first song Let's have A party was equally successful and stood for 5 weeks in the Top 40 in 1976 and 1977.
In 1982, the band had a summer hit with Italian song Il Veliero (The Sailing Ship), a cover of Italian singer Lucio Battisti. Of this song that was partly instrumental, there was a short and a long 12 inch version. The number was 11 weeks in the Top 40 with the highest listing number 24.
Other well-known songs were Gold, Mr.Jock, Love, Just A Moment Away, and Welcome to the party. During this period, the band, alongside the brothers Bartels, continued from Willy Bronzwaer, Jan Grela, Anton Stahlecker and Walter Nita.
