Hans Bendix

Hans Bendix (Copenhagen, January 19, 1898 - December 10, 1984) was a Danish cartoonist, painter and a radical reformer of culture in Denmark.

Bendix was educated in Paris, London and Copenhagen as a painter and debut in 1922. In 1925 he was appointed as a draftsman by Le Quotidien in Paris. Bendix reluctantly interrupted his work for a exile in the United States, where he lived from 1941 to 1945. He showed in his cartoons his sense of political satire, but made portraits and sketches of the theater and the ballet. He was an employee of antinazi magazines. From 1950 until his death he was editor of the Politiken newspaper. Bendix 'style is simple and graceful and sometimes showed images of young women. He made no secret of his inspiration and enthusiasm for French culture and art.

He was a member of several painters' associations including "Grønningen" and is represented in both Danish and foreign museums. For his work he was decorated with the exclusive Medio "Ingenio et Arti" and he was Knight in the Order of the Dannebrog. Bendix was chairman, after honorary member of the Danish cartoonist federation, chairman of the League of Tolerance 1948-1958, then honorary member and member of the Social-Democratic Cultural Council.

A selection of Hans Bendix's portraits of international artists has been collected in the book "Krop og kontrafejer" (1974). He also worked as an art and literary critic and wrote travel books with his own illustrations. His memoirs are published in four parts (1967-1975) entitled "Innocent Spring" (Memoires, I, 1967), "Incredible Summer" (Memoires, II, 1969), "Colorful Autumn" (memoirs III, 1973) and "Warm Winter" (IV, 1975).
