The Hungry Steps
The Hungry Steps (Kazakhs: Бетпак-Дала; Betpak-Dala or Бедпак-Дала; Bedpak-Dala) or Northern Hungry Steps (Russian: Северная Голодная степь; Severnaja Golodnaja step) is a steppe-like half desert in the middle of Kazakhstan. It borders in the north of the Ulutau mountain and the Kazakh back, in the east it borders on the Balkash lake and in the south through the mostly dehydrated river Şu. In the southwest you push the depression Asikol, behind the river Syr Darja. In the west, the Hungry Steps pass into the desert Aralkarakum.
There are only two roads through the Hunger Desert. These are the A344 from Jezqazğan to Qızılorda and the M36 on the shore of Qarağandı Balkash Lake to Alma-Ata. A railway line also supplies outbound goods from Qarağandı to the place Shū q.ä. (Шу қ.ә.).
In the middle of the Hungry Steppe lies a deserted area of Hungary, where there are no roads.
In the western part of the Hunter Steppe lies the salt lake Karakojun, which is the only lake in this area.
