Ntare V Ndizeye (Gitega, December 2, 1947 - April 29, 1972) was the last mwami (= king) of Burundi from September to November 1966.
Ntare V was known as Prince Charles Nadizeye for his coronation. He was the son of (Tutsi) king Mambutsa IV, who was in power since 1915 and his second wife, Queen Baramparaye. He was a younger brother of Crown Prince Louis Rwagasore (1932-1961).
He studied private education in Switzerland. After the murder of his brother in October 1961, Charles Ndizeye became crown prince. In July 1962, Burundi became an independent constitutional kingdom. In March 1966, King Mambutsa IV, after riots, transferred his royal power to Charles, who was raining. After the coup of Captain Michel Micombero, Deputy Secretary of State, on July 11, 1966, Mambutswa was dropped off and became Crown Prince Charles Head of State. On September 1, 1966, Charles was named Ntare V Ndizeye king of Burundi and the absolute monarchy was restored.
During a visit to Congo-Kinshasa, in November 1966, Ntare V was deposed by Micombero. The latter called Burundi into a republic. From 1966 to 1972, Ntare V lived in exile in western Germany. In March 1972, he was transferred to Burundi on behalf of Idi Amin during a visit to Uganda. Ntare V was allowed to settle in the former royal palace. In April 1972, during a failed liberation attempt, Ntare V was killed in his native Gitega. Resurrectors would have tried to free him.
