Refugee Boy


Refugee Boy is a novel by Benjamin Zephaniah, which appeared on August 28, 2001. He is about a 14-year-old refugee Alem Kelo from Ethiopia and his stay in London. Resume

The whole story is about 14-year-old boy Alem Kelo. He leads a peaceful life to a war between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Because his father is a freedom warrior, the Kelo family wants to stay. When it is decidedly dangerous, his father will take him to England on vacation. One morning he is alone, his father returns to his homeland and stays alone in London. After an exchange of letters with his father, he is sought for a residence and political asylum is requested.

First, he stays in an asylum center for young people. There he escapes and an alternative solution is sought for Alem. It is decided to put him in a foster home with Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald and their daughter Ruth. Alem is well looked after. At one point, he received a letter from his father, stating that Alem's mother was murdered. Meanwhile, Alem also appeared before the court several times to defend his asylum request. His father returns to England because it is untenable in Ethiopia. He lives in an asylum-seekers center, later Alem decides to go with him. At school it is very good, Alem is a learning boy who reads a lot. Alem's school friends prepare a protest against the verdict of the court (returning to Eritrea / Ethiopia). That went very well and even hit the news. But immediately afterwards his father is shot down by an unknown person. Alem is strong and must be for the last time, which states that he may stay with his foster family (the Fitzgerald family). Price
