Eanfrith di Bernicia

Eanfrith ("EanfriIÞ ÆÞelfriIÞing Bernicia Cyning"; ... - ...) was King of Bernicia (North England) in the years 633-634.

He was the son of King Aethelfrith, King of Bernicia and Deira. His father in 616 was defeated and killed by the king of East Anglia, Raedwald, who had placed on the throne of the two kingdoms Edwin

Eanfrith, who, according to ecclesiastical history gentis Anglorum of the Venerable Beda, was the firstborn of Aethelfrith and the heir to the throne, went exile in the north of England, among the Pitti, where he was baptized. He married a local princess, from whom he had a son, Talorgan I of Pitti, who was later king of his people (653-657).

In 633 Edwin was defeated and killed by the armies of Cadwickon ap Cadfan of Gwynedd and Penda of Mercia in the battle of Hatfield Chase and Eanfrith seized the opportunity to return home, succeeding in resuming the throne of Bernicia, while the kingdom of Deira, which his father had conquered in the past, was occupied by a relative of Edwin, Osric. According to the Venerable Beda, when returning home, Eanfrith returned to paganism.

Eanfrith might have been involved in some of the events that led to Edwin's fall, and at least initially seems to have had good relations with King Cadwallon. According to Beda's account, however, already in 634 Eanfrith, he was shot dead by the King of Gwynnedd during a meeting to negotiate the peace with which he had escaped limited to only twelve men.
