Exam subject is a term used primarily in secondary education schools in the Netherlands and, as the word indicates, refers to a subject in which examinations can or should be done.
What subjects are different in the Netherlands by type of school and may depend on the student's sector or profile choice. On most school types, subjects like Dutch and English are mandatory exam subjects.
In addition to the exam subjects, each school has a number of non-exam subjects. At many secondary schools in the Netherlands there are subjects like music, physical education, handicrafts, social science, visual education and religion. However, schools have a certain degree of freedom in the composition of the offered courses, and there are schools where students can do exams in one or more of these subjects. If a course is considered as a non-exam subject at a school, a student will in some way have to meet certain requirements in the form of presentations, assignments, etc., which will be evaluated.
