In 42 v. Chr. Norbanus Flaccus was appointed with Decidius Saxa by the Second Triumvirate to trace the murderers of Julius Caesar in Macedonia. The two took charge of eight legions. Near the city of Philippi, the Roman army met the combined army of Marcus Iunius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. The troops of Norban and Saxa were in the minority and were forced to retreat to Amphipolis. They waited until Marcus Antonius's army arrived to settle with the opponents.
