The Iron Monument in Nieuwpoort
The Iron Monument or Iron Memorial is located near the Iepersluis, part of the Ganzepoot, in Nieuwpoort. It was designed by the Belgian sculptor Pieter Braecke and was initiated on October 26, 1930. The memorial is dedicated to the First World War.
It is a monument of a woman standing on a high pillar and with her hands protecting the Belgian crown. The image is aimed at the West for the simple reason that the enemies (the Germans) came from the east. There are four more figures about the image that represent the Belgian resistance: a hurtful soldier, a blind, a sick and a vulnerable.
