The Twelve Girls Band (Traditional Chinese: 女子 十二 乐 坊; Simplified Chinese: 女子 十二 乐 坊; Pinyin: Nǚzǐ Shí'èr Yùefǎng, sometimes abbreviated to 女 乐 or 女 乐) is a group from China who uses traditional Chinese instruments. The members make both traditional Chinese songs and Western songs.
The group was founded on June 18, 2001, following an audition involving more than 4000 girls. The band members come from several conservatories from China, including the China Academy of Music, the Chinese National Orchestra, and the Central Music Conservatory. The group originally started with twelve members, but it has now grown to thirteen.
Chinese numerology gave Wang Xiao-Jing, "the godfather of Chinese rock" the idea for the Twelve Girls Band. From the earliest beginning, Xiao-Jing knew that the group had to consist of twelve members. The Chinese numerical symbol for femininity is twelve jinchai, traditional Chinese hairpins. After the audition, where it all started, Xiao-Jing had chosen twelve girls. They debuted in China in summer 2003.
Show after show was sold out and in 2004 their first album was released in North America, with Clocks of Coldplay and Only Time by Enya. Band members Discography Externe link
