The University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City is the oldest educational institution in the Philippines and Asia. The University of San Carlos was founded by the Jesuits in 1595 and is older than the University of Santo Tomas in Manila from 1611. Between 1769 and 1783, the University of San Carlos was closed due to the departure of the Jesuits. However, it became only a university in 1948. This is why the University of Santo Tomas claims to be the oldest university in the country. Externe link
