Laparoscoop

The gallbladder seen by a laparoscope

A laparoscope is a long, rigid straight pipe with a video camera and a light source mounted on it for laparoscopy: a surgery on the belly where the laparoscope and other thin instruments enter the body through relatively small slices.

A surgeon can watch a monitor in the body with the images passing the laparoscope, and intervene with the other slices if necessary.

Operations with a laparoscope are not always possible. Sometimes because the instrument is not suitable for any operations, sometimes because internal adhesions of earlier operations hinder the view of the laparoscope.
