Paoay Church

The Church of San Augustin, better known as Paoay Church, is an 18th century church in the Philippine town of Paoay in the northern province of Ilocos Norte. A number of baroque churches in the Philippines, including this church, have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1993, because of the unique combination of Baroque and Oriental architectural styles. The style in which this church is built is also referred to as Earthquake Baroque.

The construction of Paoay Church was started by Augustine Antonio Estavillo. The first cornerstone of the church was laid in 1704. The first cornerstone of the convent was laid in 1707. In 1710 the church was completed. The massive bell tower was built much later than the church. Its first cornerstone was laid in 1793. The tower is separate from the church as a precaution against earthquake damage. 18° 03′ 42″ NB, 120° 31′ 16″ OL
