André Joseph Guillaume Henri Kostermans


Dr. André Joseph Guillaume Henri 'Doc' Costermans (Purworejo, July 1, 1906 - Jakarta, July 10, 1994) was an Indonesian botanist of Dutch origin. biography

Costume was born on the island of Java, which still belonged to Dutch-India. He studied at Utrecht University, where he obtained his doctorate in 1936 with an essay on Surinamese Laurel families. He spent most of his career studying plants in Southeast Asia. He also contributed to Pulles Flora or Suriname. Kostermans was especially interested in plants from the Laurel family, Malvales (such as the Bombacaceae and the Sterculiaceae) and Dipterocarpaceae. In later years he shifted his attention to the Asian wig tree family. He published a lot of works about these and other plants.

Costmans spent a large part of his life living in Bogor. He had a large number of foster children under his care, some of which have built up a career in biology. In March 1991 he received a heart attack, but survived this. He was still alive enough for the publication of his manuscript about 69 mango species. Kostermans died in 1994 and was buried in Bogor's botanical garden, the Kebun Raya Bogor.
