Joop Boertjens

J.R.A. (Joop) Boertjens (Zwolle, 1948) is a Dutch politician of the VVD.

He was born in Zwolle but grew up in Sneek and Langweer. After the RHBS in Sneek he studied Social Geography at the University of Groningen. After that he became a geography teacher in Groningen; first at a gymnasium and then at the higher agricultural school. For several years he has been a secretary of the Groninger Society of Agriculture, which later appeared in the NLTO (Northern Agricultural and Horticultural Organization), where Boertjes brought it to the secretary treasurer. In addition, Boertjes was also politically active. From 1986 to 1990, and from 1994 to 2002, he was VVD City Council member in Zuidhorn. In May 2000 he became deputy of the province of Groningen with in his portfolio, among other things, economic affairs. This feature became available when his fellow Alexander Sakkers became Mayor of Heerlen. At the 2003 Provincial State Elections, he was VVD-list trainer in Groningen. The VVD lost in those elections, after which he no longer returned as a deputy but as a group chairman. During that period he started his own consultancy firm. In addition, he served as Mayor of Winsum for six months. In 2005, he left the group presidency to Eisse Luitjens, but continued to act as Statenlid. In 2006, in Delfzijl, where a government crisis broke out shortly, he became an elder who would remain in the council until the end of the council period in 2010. In 2011 he became re-acting mayor; this time in Leeuwarderadeel.
