Kleinzand (Sneek)

The Kleinzand is a quay and moat in the center of Sneek. The name is a bastard of the word zaan or sont, which is a narrow passage between broader waters.

The canal on the Kleinzand was still navigable as opposed to the Grootzand. On the south side of the Kleinzand there are a number of patrician houses. This part of the street was formerly called the Mennist's Hemel, to the wealthy baptismal traders who had their homes here. The residents, with the help of beneficial insiders and exteriors, presented their wealth. The houses on this side all have a deep garden, which in some cases reaches the Bothniakade. Residents in this backyard often had an elevated garden house, from which the view usually reached Joure. On the north side, the factory of Tonnema was established from 1905 until the company was moved to the Oude Oppenhuizerweg at the end of the 20th century.

On the Kleinzand there are a number of government monuments, including the Brandenburgh, and the buildings of the Freiburg Maritime Museum and the Beuweburg Distillery Widow Joustra. Also see 53° 2′ NB, 5° 40′ OL
