Martin Luther King
Martin Luther Kingday is an American holiday in honor of American Domin Luther King. The holiday is celebrated annually on the third Monday of January, around the time of Kings' birthdate, on January 15th.
The holiday was the result of a large-scale campaign led by a number of activists. One of the most remarkable of this was the blind musician Stevie Wonder, who was able to popularize the campaign with the hit Happy Birthday in 1980 and the Rally for Peace press conference in 1981. US President Ronald Reagan officially announced the law on King's honor on November 2, 1983.
The holiday was held for the first time on January 20, 1986. Since 2000, Martin Luther Kingday is officially celebrated in all 50 states of the US. The day received content with demonstrations for peace, social justice, racial and class equity, and also as a national day of volunteer organizations.
Although the day is a day off for people working for federal and state government institutions, not all companies release. Virtually all shops and restaurants are just open. Most schools and higher education institutions are closed, but some schools stay open and celebrate Kings message instead.
