Sawa van Warsaw


Sawa, also called Sabbas, Sabas or Sava, born as Michał Hrycuniak (Śniatycze, April 15, 1938) is a Polish spiritual and the metropolis of the Polish Orthodox Church.

Hrycuniak was dedicated to the priest on March 6, 1966, upon which he adopted the Sawa church name. In 1970 he was elevated to archimandrite. In 1979 he was appointed professor of theology at the Christian Theological Academy of Warsaw, an institution from 1984 to 1990 vice-rector.

Sawa was appointed bishop of Łódź and Poznań in 1979; His bishop's ceremony took place on November 25, 1979. In 1981, his appointment became Bishop of Białystok and Gdańsk. On April 18, 1987 he was elevated to archbishop.

On May 12, 1998, Sawa was elected by the Council of Bishops of the Polish Orthodox Church as the Archbishop of Warsaw and the Metropolis of Warsaw and all of Poland. He was the successor to Warsaw's Bazyli metropolitan who had laid down his duties for health reasons. His intronization took place on May 31, 1998.
