Waikato (river)

The Waikato is New Zealand's longest river. He lands on the flanks of Mount Ruapehu, in the middle of the northern island. He flows through the Taupo Lake. Just north of the city of Taupo are the spectacular Huka Falls.

The river then flows through the Waikato region winding north-westerly and divides the capital of that region, Hamilton, into two. Finally, the river flows into Tasman Sea south of Auckland, at Port Waikato.

There are eight hydroelectric power stations on the river between Taupo and Hamilton. They were built between 1929 and 1964, and deliver 11 percent of New Zealand electricity.
