Antiochus X Eusebes

tetradrachme van Antiochus X Eusebes.

Antiochus X Eusebes Philopator was King of the Seleucid Empire, or at least one of the competitors in the complicated family feast that featured the days of the empire.

The beginning of his government is probably 95 BC. His first weapon was the defeat of his related Seleucus VI Epiphanes, which he took revenge for the death of his father Antiochus IX Cyzicenus. The nicknames he assumed are characteristic of his story: Eusebes (a title that his father wore) and Philopator (father-loving) are meant to honor his father. Afterwards he ruled in Antioch and the surrounding area, but he was wrapped in an endless battle with the four brothers of Seleucus VI, the Nabateeans and the Parthen.

His end is not entirely clear; Josephus thinks he was around 90 BC. slain against the Parthen. It is true that at that time Antioch was lost to Philippus I Philadelphus. However, Appian claims that he was defeated by the Armenian king Tigranes II. This hit Syria around 83 BC. If that is true, it is not clear what his reverence has been in the meantime. A son of Antiochus X and his wife Cleopatra Selena I, was named under the name Antiochus XIII Asiaticus, vazal king in Syria after the Roman General Pompeii had defeated Tigranes.
