Baltistan Pictures. Baltic (Baltic: བལ་ ཏི་ སྟྰན), also known as Baltiyul (Baltic: བལ་ ཏི་ ཡུལ་ ་.), is a mountainous region largely part of the autonomous entity of Gilgit-Baltistan. It is limited to the north by the Karakoram chain (including K2, the second highest mountain in the world), south of the Indo river valley and Deosai plateau. It is an extremely mountainous region, with an altitude above 3.350 meters. It is sometimes called Little Tibet.
It has an area of 27,400 km and some 320,000 inhabitants (2002). The population is mostly made up of the Baltic, of Tibetan ethnicity.
The prevailing religion is Muslim. The main resort is Skardu, on the Indus River.
