East Sachaling Mountains

The Eastern Sachaling Mountains (Russian: Восточно-Сахалинские горы; Vostotsjno-Sachalinskieje gory) or Eastern Mountain (Vostotsjny chrebet) is a system of and echelon the Russian island of Sachalin, which runs parallel to the much longer West Sachaling Mountains. It has a length of 280 kilometers and is up to 85 kilometers wide and up to 1609 meters high (Mount Lopatina). Another high peak is the Sokolov (1125 meters) in the southern part of the mountain.

The mountains are severely crossed by valleys with steep fractures and consist mainly of an anticlinorial complex of metamorphic rock with intrusions from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic. Seismicity occurs, especially on the eastern side. The mountain is in an area with a monsoon climate with severe winters (January average -14 ° C) and, due to the cooling effect of the Ochotsk Sea, cool summers (August average + 16 ° C). The annual precipitation varies between 600 and 1000 millimeters and falls especially in summer and autumn.

The slopes are covered with fir and silver sprigs, cobblestone golden birch and scrub of Siberian dwarfs. Hogerop grows in places (especially around the peaks) bergtoendra and to the coast (on the east side) there are ancient terraces with lush forest and oceanic grassland.
