Emmanuel de Bethune was the ninth and youngest child of the architect Jean Bethune and Emilie van Ourtyve d'Ydewalle, of the genus of Outryve d'Ydewalle.

He was almost 26 when he became Mayor of Oostrozebeke, the municipality where the family of Outryve d'Ydewalle had her roots. His brother Jean-Baptiste de Bethune had served him in that position from 1879 to 1892. Emmanuel remained Mayor until 1899.

In 1898 he married in Wannegem-Lede with Josephine the Ghellinck d'Elseghem (1878-1904), the daughter of the Wannegem castle master.

They had a daughter and a son, Jean-Baptiste de Bethune (1900-1981) who became Marke's vessels and married Baroness Louise de Vinck (1901-1977). Among the six children from this marriage is Emmanuel Pierre de Bethune, who became Mayor of Marke and of Kortrijk. Mayor of Marke

After marriage, Emmanuel married the Bethune to Marke and attended the castle where the grandfather, Bethune's architect, died in 1894.

He was appointed to the mayor of the municipality immediately in 1900. He held this position until he died, only forty, in 1909. His wife had died already five years before. Literature
