Jean Bruce


Jean Bruce born as Jean Brochet (March 22, 1921 - March 26, 1963) was a French writer. He also wrote under the pseudonyms Jean Alexandre, Jean Alexandre Brochet, Jean-Martin Rouan, and Joyce Lindsay. He is especially known for the adventures of secret agent Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath, alias OSS 117. His mission is to fight for the good cause in an environment forgiven by spies, Nazis, Russians, Chinese, organized crime syndicates and criminals of many nature.

Some of his books were filmed in the 1960s. The first OSS 117 novel appeared in 1949. He wrote a total of 91 OSS 117 novels and some other books for his death in a crash with a Jaguar sports car. Although the first film, OSS 117 n'est pas Mort (OSS 117 is not dead) was made in 1957 with Ivan Desny in the lead, the popular series of different OSS 117 movies began only in 1963.

After his death, his wife, Josette Bruce (who passed away in 1996) continued to write up to 143 new titles for the OSS 117 series. After her death, son and daughter François and Martine Bruce wrote another 24 books until 1992. Among the declared lovers of the series were some prominent people, including Pierre Salinger, John F. Kennedy, Jean Cocteau and Gérard de Villiers. >

There were also films from a number of other Bruce books, such as Le Vicomte Règle ses comptes (The Burggraaf) with Kerwin Matthews and Cinq Gars Pour Singapore (Five Shore in Singapore) with Sean Flynn.

In the Netherlands, the OSS 117 pockets were published in the Black Beer series at A.W. Bruna Publishers in Utrecht.
