The square was an ancient administrative-juridical subdivision widespread in the areas of northern Italy in Brescia and Bergamo.

A square was a set of communes subjected to a common cadre who was referring to tax purposes. On the whole of the squares were distributed the sizes (fees) to be collected, and each square recovered the sums redistributing it among its inhabitants according to the estimate system.

There are certain reports of the existence of Venetian squares in the Venetian period (1426/28 - 1797), but the origin of this subdivision is supposed to date back to the second half of the 14th century. Notemodify wikitesto
