The Praça do Império in Portuguese (in Italian: Piazza dell'Impero) is a square located in the city of Lisbon's Belém freguesia.
The square is about 280 feet square and is the largest plaza in the Iberian peninsula and one of the largest in Europe.
Around the square are the Monastero dos Jerónimos and the Cultural Center de Belém and at its center there is a 3,300 m² garden with a large fountain.
The square commemorates the Portuguese Empire and was built on the occasion of the 1940s Great Exposition of the Portuguese World.
