Geelse hearts

The Geelse heart is a heart-shaped buttercup cookie finished with almonds and filled with marzipan and a thin layer of apricot confection. The pastry is a regional product in the Belgian city of Geel.

The cookie was created in 1986 when students who followed a bakery training at the Saint Joseph Institute of Geel made a cookie on behalf of the city of Geel. The name is a to the city's nickname, The Merciful City, to the Geel tradition of family care of psychiatric patients. The Geelse heart was officially recognized as regional product by the Regional Support Center in 2011 in Flanders.
