Jo Smeets

Jozef Gerard (Jo) Smeets (Heerlen, 19 May 1923 - 8 January 2014) was a Dutch mayor and politician of the CPP and later the CDA.

He graduated in 1953 from the law at the Catholic University of Nijmegen and worked there for three years as an official at the Hoensbroek District Secretary before he was appointed Mayor of Thorn in 1956. In 1963, Smeets mayor of Ubach became Worms and in 1970 he became appointed mayor of Kerkrade. He stayed until his retirement in 1988. In December 1990 he became Mayor of Valkenburg at the Geul because of conflicts around Mayor Paul Gilissen. Smeets would remain there until February 1992. In the summer of that year, he became Mayor of Gulpen after issues surrounding mayor Wiel Vossen who, among other things, condemned a conditional imprisonment in 1993 for cases of corruption on which he was granted dishonest resignation. Smeets continued in Gulpen until Jos Som was appointed Mayor of Gulpen in 1994.

He passed away at the beginning of 2014 at the age of 90.
