Poor by the sea

Poor by the sea (Des pauvres au bord de la mer) is a painted oil painting on canvas in 1903 by Pablo Picasso.

It is currently held in Washington, the National Gallery of Art. It belongs to a stage in Picasso's production that critics define "blue period" (1901-1904). The three human figures clearly show the artist's academic preparation; are defined by a marked outline and have a plastic appearance thanks to the shadows. They reflect a sense of closure in themselves, which results in detachment and melancholy. Like the other works of this period, the main theme is incommunicability, in fact the characters are static, real, unable to relate to each other.
