He has taught modern history at Augustana College (Illinois).
His research focused mainly on the religious and political history of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In particular, he published several studies on Cardinal Reginald Pole, of which he also cared for the monumental edition of the correspondence. In the center of his studies was also the Galileo case.
