Claudio de La Trémoille

Claudio de La Trémoille

Claudio de La Trémoille, Duke of Thouars (1566 - October 25, 1604), was a French nobleman from the 16th century, belonging to the La Tremoille family. He was the son of Louis III of La Trémoille and his wife, Giovanna of Montmorency. King Henry IV of France had been friendly to La Trémoille when he was King of Navarre, but he held him in a subordinate position once he became king of France, preferring his cousin, Enrico de La Tour d'Auvergne, Visconte di Turenna . In 1587, La Trémoille converted to Protestantism. He fought for Henry IV in the Battle of Coutras and also in Ivry's, and was rewarded with the elevation to the noble title of Duke of Thouars in 1595. This new title, however, lost to La Trémoille much more money than he earned . In 1598, the Turenna proposed to her sister-in-law Carlotta Brabantina to marry La Trémoille. Thanks to his kinship with Orange and Buglage, Carlotta Brabantina played an important role in French Protestant diplomacy. They had four children: Enrico; Carlotta, who married James Stanley, Count of Derby; Elisabetta (1601-1604); Federico (1602-1642) Count of Laval. In 1602, Carlotta Brabantina discouraged her husband from engaging in Biron's conspiracy and encouraged him to give loyalty to the king. He died in 1604.
