Evergetism

Everydayism or euergetism is a prosperity especially associated with classical antiquity.

Evergethism happened when a wealthy person got something back for a city. The city was able to build theaters, raise walls, build temples, etc. Actually, it was not the city that founded the buildings, but the benefactors did it directly. The benefactor usually had no direct reward but got prestige; During the Hellenistic period, ever-seeingism was a means of absolute rulers to profile. These rulers in turn expected goodwill.

During Pax Romana, evergreenism became the economic engine of the Roman cities and municipalities. Rich and prominent families invested in the city: not the city but the families organized. Not the city but families built many buildings. In return, they gained prestige and made themselves popular. That way, they gained political power and they would like to pay for it. From the third century crisis, wealthy families were no longer willing to give away their money.
