Indology training (The Netherlands, until 1950)

In the Netherlands, the education of an indologist had a different character from the Netherlands in 1950 than the courses for Indonesian studies afterwards. Between 1825 and 1950, this education was given to three universities in the Netherlands: the universities of Delft, Leiden and Utrecht, and the study was an education for Dutch government officials in the Dutch-Dutch colony.

After Indonesia's independence, education to Indonesian since 1950 is no longer referred to as an indologist. Because of the burden of the word, Leiden University holds the term Indonesian. The study in Leiden now has the name South and Southeast Asian Studies.

Among the students at this course were H.A. Sinclair de Rochemont, Hans Ras, Albert Alberts, Hubertus van Mook, Jan van Baal, Bep Schrieke, Han Friedericy, Horace Hugo Alexander of Gybland Oosterhoff, Louis Constant Westenenk, Auke Johannes Vleer, Herman Gerrit Schulte Nordholt, Marius Crans, Gerrit Jan Held , Pieter Westra, Theo de Graaf, Christiaan Frederik Staargaard, Cees Becht, Jan Marginus Somer and Jan Gonda.
